Position: Business Development Director / Manager - Horizon New Energy

We are looking for a Business Development Director / Business Development Manager to help us grow our renewable energy portfolio across Canada. Reporting to the Managing Director of Horizon New Energy, you will be a key member of the team leading business development and commercial efforts to originate, evaluate and negotiate new renewable energy investment opportunities. You will be responsible for managing the commercial strategy and financial evaluation of new wind, solar and energy storage projects through all development phases from early stage through construction to the operations stage for projects across Canada. You will be responsible for delivering high-quality and profitable projects that meet project financial metrics.

The preferred candidate has 8-15 yrs of experience leading commercial activities for both contracted and merchant renewable energy projects across Canada for an independent power producer (IPP).

Key responsibilities will include:

RFP / PPA Bid Strategy and Preparation

  • Track, analyze and develop strategies for procurements in Canadian target electricity markets, including tracking provincial solicitations development and timing, RFP and PPA technical and financial requirements, tracking awarded contracts and competition for past and future solicitations, collecting and analyzing strategic data supporting competitive analyses, and preparing summary presentations for senior management.

  • Lead bid strategy assessments including analyzing provincial requirements and needs, commitments, competition (qualitative and quantitative analyses), defining bid strategies including providing recommendations.

  • Perform new opportunity evaluation for future provincial procurements and assessment of RFP and contract risks – also in between active bid periods.

  • Working closely with the Horizon Project Development Team and CIP Investment teams, manage the commercial and financial preparation and evaluation of bids for provincial utility lead Request for Proposals (RFPs) and other bids/auctions/procurement solicitations. Work closely with the Business Development Associate to build project proforma models that incorporate all commercial aspects of RFPs and PPAs.

  • Negotiate new PPAs with utilities, commercial and industrial customers for upcoming projects. Provide guidance on structuring long and short-term PPAs, manage basis risk, and deploy hedging strategies.

Bid Governance

  • Prepare and manage reporting materials, legal reviews, peer-review materials and senior management update materials.

  • Prepare for and address post-bid requests, including responses to clarification requests, questions, additional materials preparation, and support to additional management and shareholder approvals.

  • Prepare post-award requirements, including listing bid commitments, award requirements, and other applicable requirements supporting transition to the project team.

Project Acquisitions & Greenfield Development

  • Identify and source new renewable energy project acquisition opportunities, conduct and manage the coordination of internal resources to conduct due diligence and financial analysis for multiple projects in parallel.

  • Support greenfield development of utility-scale wind, solar, and storage assets across multiple provincial markets by providing commercial guidance to the project development team. Note, for applicants with strong renewable project development experience and a desire to continue providing project development support, the opportunity to do so may occur.

Electricity Market Outlook

  • Conduct market research and gather competitive intelligence, including coordinating with the project development team to produce competitive analysis and other reporting materials.

  • Track and provide updates to senior management on structure and evolution of key Canadian provincial electricity markets, in particular in B.C., Alberta and Ontario, and provincial renewable energy procurements and policy drivers.

  • Continuously monitor and analyze Canadian renewable energy market trends, development conditions, and emerging opportunities.

  • Monitor, manage and report on key policy and regulatory developments that impact project economics through industry associations like the Canadian Renewable Energy Association.

  • Develop deep industry knowledge and contacts with a focus on understanding the competitive landscape in order to effectively develop Horizon’s commercial strategy and execution plan.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering or a related field. MBA or CFA considered an asset.

  • 5-10+ years of power origination/marketing experience, renewable energy business development and/or renewable project development experience with a utility-scale renewable energy developer or IPP. Minimum 5+ yrs experience with renewable energy project RFP submissions.

  • Experience originating and negotiating renewable energy PPAs within the past 5 yrs.

  • Proven track record of originating and executing wind, solar and energy storage investment opportunities. Excellent negotiation and deal structuring skills.

  • Knowledge of wholesale electricity markets and corporate/commercial bi-lateral power contracts and understanding of common PPA structures and hedging strategies. Understanding of Alberta and/or Ontario electricity markets required.

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct due diligence and financial analysis of wind, solar and BESS projects.

  • Strong background in financial analysis including project pro forma development and analysis. Demonstrated skills in financial modelling, including financial sensitivity and scenario worksheets.

  • Strong network of industry relationships in the Canadian renewable energy space.

  • Driven, self-starter with a strong business development acumen.

  • Personal and relationship skills and the ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a fast paced team-oriented environment

  • High level of attention to detail, ability to excel under pressure and perform effectively in a team setting

  • Ability to summarize complex issues and identify opportunities or next steps is critical.

  • Ability to manage simultaneous projects/work streams, set priorities, and exercise independent judgment.

  • Organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple concurrent efforts, track the progress and needs of each, and provide high-quality deliverables accurately and on time.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, as well as Sharepoint and Teams and other relevant office management tools.

Willingness to travel. You must be legally eligible to work in Canada. Fluency in English is required. French considered an asset.

The Business Development Director or Manager will report to the Managing Director of Horizon New Energy. The position is based in Calgary.
